Fixing a Faulty Water Heater – Quick Tips and When to Call a Pro
If you’ve stepped into a cold shower, the first thing you’ll ask yourself is why your water heater stopped working. Most faults are caused by a few simple things – a tripped breaker, a broken thermostat, or a buildup of sediment. Before you call anyone, try these quick checks.
Spot the common culprits
Turn the power off at the breaker and look at the pilot light. If the pilot won’t ignite, the thermocouple might be dirty or worn out. Reset the thermostat and wait a few minutes; sometimes the unit just needs a reset after a power surge.
Listen for strange noises. A rumbling sound usually means sediment is boiling at the bottom of the tank. Sediment reduces efficiency and can cause the heating element to overheat. Flushing the tank once a year often solves this problem.
Simple fixes you can do yourself
1. Reset the breaker: Flip the water heater’s circuit breaker off for 30 seconds, then turn it back on. Many electric heaters restart cleanly after this.
2. Check the temperature setting: Most households set it to 120°F (49°C). If it’s set too low, you’ll think the water isn’t heating when it’s just a matter of temperature.
3. Flush the tank: Turn off gas/electric power, shut the cold‑water inlet, attach a garden hose to the drain valve, and let the water run until it’s clear. This clears sediment and helps the heater work longer.
4. Inspect the anode rod: A corroded rod can cause rust inside the tank. If it’s more than half worn away, replace it. It’s a cheap part and can add years to your heater’s life.
If any of these steps don’t bring back hot water, or if you notice leaks, rumbling, or a burning smell, it’s time to call a professional. Trying to fix a gas valve or a cracked tank yourself can be dangerous.
